The Promise
Debra Keathley

I took off down the road one night.
Had holes in both my shoes.
A thousand miles I’ve travel Lord,
Can’t shake these doggone blues.

I thought I had gone about as far
Low down as a man could go.
Until I saw those clouds rush in
And saw the storm winds blow.

I didn’t look to right nor left
I had nowhere to go.
But I couldn’t help an insane smile
That my life could turn out so.

You couldn’t call me genius,
But few men call me dumb.
I breathed a prayer, Please take me quick Lord
When my time is come.

At last, when I could take no more
I threw my knapsack down.
And as I did, the storm picked me up
And smashed me to the ground.

I cannot take this anymore
To the Lord I cried.
If you don’t love me anymore,
Why don’t you let me die!

My answer, it came suddenly.
I saw the storm clouds clear.
And the sun on yon horizon
Felt so warm and looked so near.

And I saw a rainbow touch the earth
And paint across the sky.
And I knew that if I kept my path
I’d find good times bye and bye.
